About Me

I am a leading Australian historian and curator with a PhD from the University of Queensland in Brisbane. I have authored a number of books and I am active across a a range of fields. I advocate for social equality and LGBTIQ rights and volunteer with a number of community organisations. I am also passionate about Pacific histories and am proud of my Fijian heritage. This is my personal website and opinions expressed here are my entirely my own.

HISTORIAN

I have expertise as an historian of LGBTIQ Australia, HIV/AIDS history, social movements, Aboriginal-European contact history, the history of childhood and oral history. I have worked as an Associate Professor in QLD and NSW. I am passionate about connecting communities through outreach and innovative approaches, including exhibitions, that empower diverse and marginalised voices from across Australia. In 2017, the Conversation named me as one of Australia’s top fifty thinkers.

AUTHOR

I am the author and editor of eleven books and a series of other publications that cover topics ranging widely from marriage equality through to military service. I have also written popular journalistic pieces for the Sydney Morning Herald, the Brisbane Times, Huffington Post, ABC News, SBS News, Pink News and many other publications.

ADVOCATE

I am an energetic and committed advocate for history and for social equality and I volunteer my time with groups promoting these causes. I also publicly advocate for change and provide historical context as an invited expert speaker in forums ranging from Twitter panels through to radio and television programs such as The Project and Sky News
